Purchase Inspections

A pre-purchase inspection is strongly advised when acquiring a vehicle without warranty coverage. Assuming full responsibility entails financial prudence, making an inspection a logical decision. Identifying potential issues prior to purchase can result in significant cost savings. Detected problems can be leveraged for negotiation purposes, potentially securing a more favorable price. Moreover, if identified issues prove to be prohibitively expensive or compromise the safety of the vehicle, abstaining from the purchase allows for seeking a safer alternative, ensuring the well-being of you and your family.

Consider a Vehicle Inspection

1

What about the CarFax?

Yes, get that CarFax before you consider purchasing a vehicle. It can be helpful. The report will include service history and any accident reports. However, understand these are usually incomplete. If the accident wasn't reported or the previous owner "knew a guy" that did work in the driveway those items won't be there. A quailifed mechanic will be able to tell in more detail the conditions of various systems.

2

Negotiation

If you have a pre-purchase inspection you will be provided a list of regular maintenance items to consider and a list of concerning items. If you know the vehicle needs new control arms, or the rear brakes are below 3mm and need to be replaced you can show this to the seller to either negotiate the repairs be made prior to purchase or to get the purchase price lower so you can have those repairs completed. The power of negotiation starts with knowledge.

3

What Will I Learn?

The big thing your mechanic is going to evaluate during your inspection are the saftey components: brakes, suspension components, seat belts and horn operation. He will scan the vehicle for any current or historical diagnostic data. He will look over the engine components, cooling system parts the starting system. Anything that is discovered will be estiamted and prioritized to help you decide if this vehicle is right for you.

Five Questions to Ask

If you've found a used car that captures your interest and plan to have a professional vehicle inspection, plan on asking your mechanic these questions to ensure you have all the info you need to make your decision.

  1. Has the car sustained any prior accidents? While this detail ideally should have been disclosed by the seller, an adept mechanic can discern this by inspecting the vehicle. Any history of accidents may entail the replacement of original parts and could potentially signal future maintenance needs.

  2. How do I differentiate between seemingly identical cars? Your mechanic can identify the factors influencing a vehicle's pricing relative to similar models. This insight is invaluable in avoiding overpayment for a car that, while driving smoothly, may harbor underlying mechanical issues.

  3. Are there any necessary repairs before purchasing? Should any imperative repairs be warranted BEFORE purchase and subsequent operation, your mechanic can identify these. This information can be pivotal in negotiating with the seller, potentially securing their assistance in covering the associated costs before finalizing the purchase.

  4. What are the essential services post-purchase? Upon conducting a comprehensive used car inspection, our technicians can outline the maintenance requirements for your vehicle. This may range from routine tasks like oil changes to anticipating larger investments such as tire or brake pad replacements. Understanding these needs aids in preparing for post-purchase expenditures.

  5. Could you devise a maintenance regimen for me? Following a thorough inspection, if the vehicle is deemed fit for purchase and the transaction proceeds, our technicians can assist in formulating a tailored maintenance plan. Adhering to such a plan is paramount in preserving your vehicle's longevity, ensuring that necessary maintenance and repairs are promptly addressed, thereby safeguarding your investment.
