Hydraulic Power
Steering

Hydraulic pressure, generated by the power steering pump driven by the engine via a serpentine belt, aids in steering wheel motion. This pressurized power steering fluid flows through the power steering hose and is directed to the power steering control valve at the steering gear.

Electric Power
Steering

This system employs an electric motor in lieu of the traditional hydraulic power steering components. Positioned separately from the vehicle's engine, the electric motor is typically installed on the steering rack or column. Electric power steering systems are favored for their fuel efficiency and reduced emissions.

Electro-Hydraulic Power Steering

In this system, a hydraulic pump is powered by an electric motor that sends pressurized fluid to a rack and pinion to assist you when turning the wheels. It relies on sensor inputs from multiple points, including the steering angle, speed and engine RPMs. The pump motor works off the vehicle’s electrical system.

Common Power Steering Issues

What are the typical reasons behind power steering system failure? The primary culprit is often a fluid leak, stemming from various sources such as a faulty gasket or a cracked hose. Initially, these leaks may start small but tend to worsen over time.

Detecting and rectifying leaks promptly can prevent long-term damage. However, persistent low fluid levels can lead to further system deterioration. In severe cases, a depleted fluid reservoir can cause significant damage to the power steering pump. Signs of impending pump failure include whining noises during turning maneuvers and increased steering effort. In such instances, immediate professional attention is essential.

Even in the absence of visible damage, regular fluid replacement is crucial. Over time, hydraulic fluid loses viscosity and accumulates debris from metal component wear. This debris can exacerbate friction and accelerate system degradation. Ultimately, aged fluid becomes ineffective, compromising steering performance.

Tips for Power Steering Maintenance

 

Regularly Monitor Fluid Levels

Regularly checking the power steering fluid level is an effective method for identifying leaks. Locate the power steering fluid reservoir under the hood, referring to the owner's manual if needed. The reservoir typically features a dipstick or fill line for fluid level assessment. It's important to check the fluid level when the engine is hot for accurate readings. Conducting this check monthly enables early leak detection and timely repairs.

Replace Power Steering Filter Annually

The power steering system includes a filter that traps debris and metal shavings from the fluid. Annual replacement of this filter is necessary to prevent fluid contamination and system strain. Neglecting filter replacement leads to increased debris accumulation, imposing additional workload on the pump and compromising system integrity.

Consider Power Steering Flushing

If the steering fluid becomes excessively contaminated, flushing the system is recommended. This procedure, conducted by a qualified mechanic, involves draining the old fluid and flushing out the remaining contaminants using compressed air. Power steering flushing ensures the replacement of all fluid, maintaining system cleanliness and efficiency.

Inspect the Pump for Damage

If maintenance has been neglected, having the power steering system inspected by a professional is advisable. While repair is feasible for most components, the pump may have suffered irreparable damage. Replacement of the pump may be necessary to restore optimal system function.
